I first went to Mateus Bistro about 9 years ago, and I loved it!! My first time there I ordered my dinner and as usual told my waitress who at that time was Kira, that I have an anaphylactic allergy to shellfish. I expected her to let the kitchen staff know as is usual in most restaurants, but less than 5 minutes later the owner and head chef Matt came out talked to me and assured me that he alone was making my meal, using pans that had been unused that day and were thoroughly clean, and he would wear latex gloves just in case there was any oils on his hands from preparing other meals, that contained shellfish. That was almost 10 years ago, and still if I call to make a reservation, when I give my name they know who I am.Unfortunately I have not been to Mateus Bistro in about 18 months. (I don't live close so it's an overnight trip or a weekend visit to Mahone Bay).Having travelled across Canada and through some of the USA, I have to say that Mateus Bistro is extremely high on my list of top 3 restaurants/pubs I've been to. (Very high on my top three ).Thanks for always making my meal/visit so special and memorable Matt, Kira and Sarah.FYI**I am not affiliated with Mateus Bistro in any way, I am not in a paid partnership with them, and I most definitely AM NOT paid or reimbursed IN ANY WAY for my review. My thoughts and feelings about this Bistro are purely my own and are based on the numerous times I've eaten there**
This is a low end restaurant disguised as a sophisticated bistro through its pricing and decor. The service, terrible. The drinks, highly over priced. The food, terribly over cooked. My partner and I could not finish our burgers as they had the flavour profiles and juiciness of a brick. There are not many tables at this bistro and there were 3 girls working maybe 13 tables. Astonishingly slow and lacking basic service skills such as eye contact and a smile. The live music however was fantastic. My partner and I feel hugely ripped off after a $95 bill for a few drinks, and 2 burgers. Save your money and head to Lunenburg folks.
I was coaxed into trying Mateus Bistro by their sign that read "Voted #1 Seafood Chowder in Nova Scotia". As a chowder addict, I couldn't pass up the challenge; thankfully they were able to back up their claim. The chowder was rich and creamy, with a hint of tomato; which caught me by surprise at first, but grew on me more and more after each spoonful. Based on the fantastic food, the friendly service, and great location, it's safe to say that I'll be frequenting Mateus Bistro in the near future.
Very tasty dishes (even a vegan dessert!) A really cute, cozy place with excellent service!
So glad we visited Mahone Bay and dined here. Tip: Call in advance to make reservations. Dessert was so well done, I highly recommend you try it and order a French press coffee too. The main dish was a lot of food and full of flavour, delicious.
